Water, Sanitation and Hygiene
Water and hygiene are essential for life. Without safe drinking water, proper sanitation, and good hygiene practices, people cannot maintain good health or enjoy a safe and dignified life.
Globally, more than 2 billion people lack access to safe and readily available water at home. In Africa and South Asia, Benefits for Ummah works to provide clean and safe drinking water in communities where it is needed most.
A single water well can serve a community of around 3,000 people, while a hand water pump can provide water for up to 200 people.
Many communities still struggle to access clean water and proper sanitation facilities. A large number of people become seriously ill or lose their lives because of diseases linked to unsafe water, poor sanitation, and inadequate hygiene.
Following the COVID-19 pandemic, investing in safe water, reliable sanitation facilities, and proper hygiene practices has become even more important.
Why Focus on Water and Hygiene?
Water, sanitation, and hygiene, commonly known as WASH, are essential for improving public health, education, and socioeconomic development.
A lack of clean water for drinking, cooking, and household use, combined with poor sanitation and hygiene practices, increases the risk of waterborne diseases.
Children are particularly vulnerable to illnesses such as diarrhoea. These illnesses can seriously affect their health, education, growth, and overall development.
In many parts of the world, women and girls are responsible for collecting water and managing household hygiene. When clean water and proper sanitation facilities are available nearby, they can spend less time collecting water and more time on education, work, and income-generating activities.
Improved WASH facilities can also support economic development by reducing healthcare costs, preventing illness, and improving productivity.
By investing in water and hygiene initiatives, we can help create healthier, safer, and more resilient communities.
Benefits for Ummah Water and Hygiene Programme Goals
Universal access to clean water, sanitation, and hygiene is essential for improving public health and well-being.
Benefits for Ummah works to improve access to these basic services while focusing on sustainable, long-term solutions. Our programme also considers the maintenance and repair of water and sanitation facilities so communities can continue benefiting from them for years.
