Violence against women and girls is one of the most extensive global problems on human rights that affects everyone. It can be physical, economic, or sexual. And it can happen to anyone; age or socioeconomic status doesn’t matter.

Usually, this violence is often left with physical and emotional scars that can last a lifetime, including the victim’s family and friends. It can lead to social isolation, poverty, and other forms of discrimination.

What are the Common Violence Women and Children Faces?

Violence is not one form and doesn’t only mean physical or sexual torture. It also can be psychological including threats, forced or early marriage, coercion, female genital mutilation, and so-called ‘honor killings. And surprisingly, mostly, this violence is perpetrated by people known to the victim, such as intimate partners, family members, friends, colleagues at work, etc.

  • More than 650 million women face child marriage, and 35-70% of them face violence from their partner.
  • Another violence is genital mutilation; up to 200 million women undergo this violence, and almost one-third of them are cut before they turn five.
  • 35% of women face sexual harassment at their work, public places, etc. in their lifetime.
  • 71% of human trafficking victims are women and girls, and three out of four are children.
  • Gender discrimination is still available, and mostly the victims are women. Almost 100 countries don’t pay women and men the same amount for the same job. Though women are giving their best efforts and, in some cases doing better than men.

How Violence Affects Women and Children’s Life

Violence against women and children can have a devastating impact on their lives and well-being. It can occur in a variety of forms, including physical, sexual, emotional, and psychological abuse, and affect both women and children emotionally and psychologically.

  • Domestic violence can lead to physical and psychological injuries including chronic pain and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Women who are victims of domestic violence may also experience social isolation, financial problems, and difficulty accessing quality health care.
  • Sexual violence can cause reproductive health problems, such as unwanted pregnancies and sexually transmitted infections (STIs). Sexual violence can also lead to psychological trauma that can last long after the incident has occurred.
  • Children who witness violence at home or in their community are more likely to experience mental health problems, such as anxiety or depression. In addition, children who experience violence often suffer from increased levels of stress and anxiety, which can interfere with their ability to learn and develop properly.
  • Women facing violence at work has far-reaching consequences for both women and the businesses they work for. It can have a negative impact on women’s careers, wages, and overall quality of life. Sometimes victims of violence may choose to leave their jobs because of the hostile environment,
  • Violence in public places has a significant impact on women, both emotionally and physically. Emotionally, women are often the victims of violence in public places, which can lead to feelings of fear, intimidation, and vulnerability. Physically, violence in public places can lead to serious injuries and even death.

The effects of violence against women and children cannot be overstated. Every person has the right to live free from violence and exploitation, regardless of gender or age. So, it is essential that we work together to address violence against women and children so that they can reach their full potential as human beings.

How to Stop Violence Against Women and Children

Preventing violence against women and girls means creating a society in which women and girls can live free from violence and abuse. From raising awareness to providing resources and support, there are many things we need to do to make it possible.

  • Benefits for Ummah work to address the root causes of violence – such as poverty, inequality, and social exclusion – which often lead to exploitation and abuse to prevent violence from happening in the first place and can create safe environments.
  • Educating people about the dangers of violence against women and the effects it has on victims and society. The more people will know about this, the sooner we can start to see real change in the lives of victims.
  • We raise awareness and encourage people to speak out if they experience violence and support them, ensuring resources like shelters, counseling services, and legal assistance.
  • We support women’s and children’s empowerment through education, advocacy, and technical assistance. So, they can be independent and make their own choices without worrying about their lives.
  • We create positive environments so that violence against women and children is seen as unacceptable and criminal instead of simply part of everyday life.
  • We arrange programs that promote gender equality, parenting technique for families, child rights, stopping child marriage, and education regarding healthy relationships to ensure children and women are safe from abuse.
